It is with deep sorrow that the Hundred Club announces the Passing of Director John Gavallas.

Chief John C. Gavallas, age of 80, died following a courageous battle with cancer.

Retiring in 2020 from the Watertown Police Department after an extraordinary 51-year career marked by unwavering dedication and distinguished service to the Watertown community. He began his career on August 11, 1969, as a patrolman and quickly rose through the ranks: Detective in 1976, Detective Sergeant in 1983, Chief Inspector in 1985, Deputy Chief in 1995, and ultimately Chief of Police in 2007. He concluded his career by serving as Interim Town Manager in 2020, guiding the town through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

One of his proudest accomplishments was serving alongside his son, Lieutenant Tim Gavallas, who retired from the Watertown Police Department in 2024 after 30 years of service.

Throughout his career, Chief Gavallas served numerous roles, including Youth Officer and Hostage Negotiator. He spent much of his time leading the Detective Bureau.

His service was recognized with numerous awards and commendations, including Distinguished Service, Meritorious Service, Professional Development, and Special Unit Awards.

Chief Gavallas also made significant contributions to the broader law enforcement community. He served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association, was Treasurer of the Western Area Regional Chiefs of Police and chaired the Connecticut Police Chiefs Traffic Safety Committee.

Even in retirement, he remained deeply committed to public service, serving as Chairman of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, a Board Member of the 100 Club, a member of the Watertown Board of Education, and a member of the Watertown Police Commission.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Chief Gavallas was a proud veteran of the United States Navy.

He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
