A call for all fire departments throughout
the state to respond to a request for names
of firefighters who lost their lives in the line
of duty has been issued by Chief (Ret.) Ernest
Herrick of Storrs.Chief Herrick, chairman of the State
Fighters Memorial Committee, is asking
officials in the departments to provide the
names and other pertinent information related
to firefighters whose names should
be engraved on the memorial which was
dedicated last August. He emphasized that
a department which has lost a firefighter
should provide the committee with that
information.
According to Chief Herrick, the committee
plans to have the names of the fallen
firefighters engraved on the granite memorial
this spring. More than 300 names are
expected to be etched in the stone at that time.
Chief Herrick and Jeffrey J. Morrissette,
state fire administrator, said preliminary
plans call for the first memorial service to be
held in October, possibly on the weekend
which launches Fire Prevention Week.
The memorial is on the grounds of the Fire
Training Academy in Windsor Locks. It was
constructed at a cost of approximately
$400,000. The committee is continuing to accept
donations. For information contact Mr. Morrissette at the academy.
