The Hundred Club of Connecticut is a charitable, non-profit, tax exempt organization of more than 2000 of our leading citizens from all parts of the state and from all walks of life who are committed to the task of easing the financial burdens of the surviving spouse and children of all police officers, correction officers, and firefighters, volunteer and full-time, who have given up their lives in the performance of their duties.
Since the founding of the Club in 1967, 206 of our brave public servants have made the supreme sacrifice.
After an initial grant of $10,000 to the spouse, a close and frequent follow-up is conducted relative to the family's situation to alleviate and act on special problems which might have developed. The Club, through its Special Assistance and Scholarship Committees, provides the necessary help in connection with crushing expenses which often threaten to overwhelm the families, and arranges for any needed medical, dental, or other professional services.
The Hundred Club is so unique that it sometimes is unbelievable in its purpose, and is even more unusual as one looks at its financial giving. In the thirty-one years of its existence, over $6,600,000 has been given to family members covering a multitude of financial necessities. If there is one area of singular pride, it is the college and vocational school funding. Over 145 of the surviving children and spouses have taken advantage of the Scholarship Program. It has become the pride of The Hundred Club.
Our membership has steadily grown to its present level and our programs are ever expanding, as each year we strive to extend greater support in our efforts to ease the financial burdens which are thrust upon each family when tragedy strikes. Members of the Hundred Club are prideful of their association with this noble charity and as such display with that same sense of pride and camaraderie the symbols of the club, i.e., shield, lapel pin.
The Hundred Club membership is saying to all citizens of Connecticut, "We care for our public servants. We recognize the supreme sacrifice and we are morally bound to care for those who care for us." We are, indeed, - The Club with a heart.
