The third annual service to honor firefighters who
lost their lives in the line of duty will be
held Sunday Oct. 16 at the Connecticut Fire
Academy, Windsor Locks. The event will start at
2 p.m.The name of a Southington firefighter
who died last April will be added to the
memorial. Justin M. Wisnewski, 18, sustained
fatal injuries during training exercises at the
State Fire School, Wolcott.
It is expected that state officials,
representatives of statewide firefighters’
organizations and an official of the National
Fallen Firefighters Foundation in Emmitsburg,
Md., will make brief remarks.
The $40,000 memorial, located in front of the
academy on Perimeter Road, was dedicated in 2002
by Lt. Gov. M. Jodi Rell. Mrs. Rell returned as
governor to participate in the ceremonies last
year.
The focal point of the memorial setting is
the large block of polished black granite on
which are engraved the images of four
firefighters battling a blaze. The names of the
more than 300 fallen firefighters are inscribed
on granite blocks set around the perimeter of a
plaza that includes a brick patio shaped in the
form of a Maltese Cross, the universal symbol of
the firefighting service.
The academy is a short distance from Bradley
International Airport and is easily reached from
